About Palmerston North

Palmerston North, known in Māori as Papaioea and affectionately called ‘Palmy,’ is a vibrant city in New Zealand's North Island. Located approximately 140km north of capital Wellington, this predominately flat city - located in the Manawatū region – is home to the winding Manawatū River, and offers stunning views of the Manawatū Gorge, Ruahine, and Tararua Ranges. These forested hills and native bushlands provide ample opportunities for nature lovers. Palmerston North is the country's eighth-largest urban area, with an estimated population of 91,800 (June 2023) from 130 different ethnicities.

The city itself hosts many events which bring together the local community. Heritage collections, art galleries, and urban street art are prominent in Palmerston North and goes hand-in-hand with an array of cafes and dining options that will take your taste buds on a tour of the world.

Climate

Palmerston North enjoys a temperate climate, with warm afternoons during summer reaching between 20 to 22 °C (72 °F) in summer and 12 °C (54 °F) in winter. Since the conference will take place in November, which is spring in New Zealand, we would advise you to stay prepared for a range of weather conditions - from cool, frosty mornings to warm afternoons. Temperatures during spring typically range from 4.5 to 18 °C (40 to 65F). We advise you to dress in layers to stay comfortable throughout the day.

Important note: It is highly encouraged that you make group bookings ahead of time, given that another conference is taking place at the same time as the 17 th IHC. Most restaurants are closed on Monday, so it is best to check before you head out for dining.
